A Perfect Stay In Monterey – Monterey, California

“…There between the hills and sea, I looked down and saw a Monterey morning, sprinkled upon the surface of the earth like dim fireflies in a shifting fog.”   View From The Hill – A poem About John Steinbeck’s Monterey, California I have always said that if I ever went to California, there was really only one place I would want to see – Monterey.  I guess I first heard about Monterey when I was a teenager growing up on the east coast.  I had a reading assignment in my ninth grade English class to read John Steinbeck’s Of Mice And Men.  We were assigned a certain amount of chapters each day…

Uncork And Unwine At Hall Winery In Napa Valley, California

This has been a busy week! With, unfortunately, a LOT of hit or miss wifi and internet!  You know the saying – “when life gives you lemons…” in this case, it would have been grapes – so we decided to start the week off with a visit to a winery and do a little wine tasting!  Both of these were a first for me, and Napa just happened to be the perfect place  – since Italy wasn’t available 😊 My grandfather is from Italy, and, even though I have never been there myself, I feel like I come by my love for  wine, naturally.  I am not a wine expert…

A Taste Of Fall At Boa Vista Orchards In Apple Hill, Placer County, CA

Looking back, I have many fond memories of my childhood.  It seems like it snowed every Christmas, and school was closed a lot due to snow days.  Spring brought flowers and the start of garden season – not to mention Easter candy and my birthday, which was a really big deal to me back then 🙂  From there, it was long, lazy summer days spent at the lake or the shore, with cousins or friends.  Summers seemed longer back then, probably because we squeezed every moment we could into being outside – usually long past when the street lights came on.  You knew summer was coming to an end though, when…

Pumpkin Roll With Cream Cheese Filling

With this past Saturday being the first day of Fall, it was time to break out the pumpkin and make something really delicious!  If it wasn’t for the fact that it is still hitting temps of 90 degrees here during the day, I would have also broke out the sweaters, boots, scarves and everything else that makes the transition from the warm days of Summer to the chilly afternoons of Fall, a little easier.  If my seasons could consist of only Summer and Fall, I would be happy!  I love Summer for its long, hot and sunny days.  I love Fall for all of its color, the crisp air, the boots…

    Beale Half Marathon – September 14, 2018

I do not normally “bark” about myself directly, but today I am going to, because I am actually pretty happy with myself! A few years ago I stumbled onto a website about the National Park Half Marathon Series.  My goal, since then, has been to run one half marathon within that series each year, until I have run each one at least once.  This year, I was signed up to run the Rocky Mountain Half in August, in Estes Park, CO.  The challenge with this goal of mine, is being in a location close enough to the location of the race, AT THE TIME OF THE RACE.  Originally I thought…

    Once Upon A Cold Brew

Starbucks who??  Actually, I am a fan of a few of their drinks.  This cold brew that we have been making though, not only has it diminished my trips to Starbucks, but, it is sort of like a fairy tale.  From the very beginning, when you first open that bag of coffee beans (or grinds, if you do not have a grinder), the aroma that escapes the bag – it is like it is casting a spell on you as it pulls you in.  And those beans, they must be magic beans, because no other drink (or potion 🙂 ) can do what one sip of coffee can do – completely…

    Making Every Mile Count

Do you run?  Maybe you walk, or ride a bike.  Chances are, if you do not, someone you know does.  Maybe it is a best friend, or a daughter or a mother, a sister, or even a brother or a son.  We all have activities that we enjoy doing.  I run.  I have been running for quite a few years now, and I more often than not, run alone.  Normally, I would run around the same time, on the same route.  There was a time when I didn’t really ever give much thought to where or when I was running.  I would put on my running shoes, and just go. …

On A Roll At Sushi In The Raw In Nevada City, California

I have to start this post by saying that Nevada City is a great little town.  Located about 60 miles Northeast of Sacramento, it was, at one time, the most important mining town in the state of California.  Today, many of the buildings are on the Register of Historic Places.  They are considered historical landmarks, and have been preserved.  And just FYI, for those of you who like to watch sappy Hallmark Christmas movies (you know who you are…), the 2006 Hallmark Movie, The Christmas Carol, was filmed here. On Saturday night, we had reservations (made a MONTH in advance), to have dinner at Sushi In The Raw.  I have to…

Or, maybe, you are just looking for something you can make that you can have a little fun with! Paella could be the answer for you.  It is a dish that can be as cheap or expensive as you want to make it.  It can be simple, with minimal ingredients; or you can run with it, and put a little bit of everything and anything in it.  One thing is for sure though, you will have…
